CHAUFFEUR is delighted to announce the debut solo exhibition in Sydney by Australian artist Nyah Isabel Cornish at 3 Liverpool Lane. Liminal Space/s sees the painter continue to consider and examine how historical painting movements and genre, in particular post impressionism and post War abstraction has evolved, revitalized and appropriated in our current digital and screen based life.
Liminal space refers to the place a person is in during a transitional period - an in between space. It can be perceived physically (like a tunnel), emotionally (like a separation) or metaphorically (like a decision). The in-between space for internet and digital aesthetics is conceived as empty or abandoned spaces.
Taking these two concepts into account and the exhibition title in mind suggests we are in a constant transitional period of production and reception. Where does majority of society source their inspiration from? Where does the visual source of digital image production and consumption originate? Our attention is continuously subverted into an endless pursuit of image engagement and production guided by the constant renewal and immediate visual stimuli effect with the expectation of instant accessibility.
Nyah Isabel Cornish fresh and vibrant new paintings reverse the process of image making by confronting time and setting her own pace within the confines of the painted space; she favours a more concise approach guided by slow decisions and contemplation. While heavily relying on intuition to form different moods of expression then social media and other digital associations.
Liminal Space/s takes its cues from the actual processes of painting - the saturation and desaturation of matter is critical to the way Cornish considers and examines the surface. Cornish begins with no preconceived idea of the finished image. While working on multiple paintings her strength lies in the ability to respond and engage with colour, formed texture and composition as it unfolds.
