MARCO FRANCO
PARES

SEPTEMBER 7 - 30, 2023

Marco Franco’s new presentation Pares unpacks his rigorous practice and interest in expanding fields of sculpture and drawing with key elements of pairing rhythmic virtuosity with explorations into materiality and form. Franco’s practice is an endless pursuit in search of the imperfect rhythm.

We are delighted to present Marco Franco for the first time on Australian shores.

Recently shortlisted for the prestigious Foundation Luso Americano Drawing Award (FLAD) for the Drawing Room Art Fair Lisbon (2023), Franco has performed at Culturegest, Lisbon (2021), solo presentations at Bruno Múrias, Lisbon (2020, 2023) Galeria Zé dos Bois, Lisbon curated by Natxo Checa (2020) and Goethe Institut, Lisbon (2019).

Franco lives and works in Lisbon, Portugal.

It comes as no surprise to acknowledge Franco’s personal history with rhythm and music implementing and releasing multiple sonic and instrumental compositions on various record labels as an influential jazz drummer and composer.

His idiosyncratic language is informed by 80’s pop culture; Franco is well respected in the Portuguese underground and experimental music scene. His attention to detail and reflection on the need to create music and recently visual art from the soul is self-taught and speaks of conviction. What emerges is influenced by a discipline to maintain an honest and transparent practice.

Marco Franco’s new presentation Pares unpacks his rigorous practice and interest in expanding fields of sculpture and drawing with key elements of pairing rhythmic virtuosity with explorations in materiality and form. Franco’s conceptual practice seems an endless pursuit in search of the imperfect rhythm.

When encountering the enigmatic sculptural forms by Franco they seem binary by nature. They are perceived as simple and complex. Several new works encapsulate an immediate sense of fluidity and on the contrary a dense stillness advocating visceral imagery from the subconscious. Sheets of silicone, polyurethane and lagopan are twisted, bent, overlayed, folded within, reversed and underpinned by metal binding clips. They are elegant and emotive synthetic assemblages suggesting comparability to bodily anatomy, living organisms and natural phenomena.

From compositions implementing minimal tension, delicate modulation of sculpture to obscure graphite and ink patterns on paper. Franco is dedicated to counter intuitive expression which transverses multiple mediums.
