“I came to realise that they are about negation - neither this nor that. With nothing fixed, continuously shifting. Everything forming everything else.”
- Paul Boston, 2023

CHAUFFEUR is delighted to present This by acclaimed Melbourne painter Paul Boston. This is Boston´s first solo presentation in Sydney since 2011. Please join us for the opening reception March 7, 6-8pm in the laneway.

Expanding a considered painting practice for over fifty years, leading Australian abstractionist painter Paul Boston has been consistent in engaging with light, space and materiality. Boston´s painterly language of reductive or minimal geometric shapes and forms endlessly questions abstraction adopting a sophisticated subdued palette in recent times.

The interplay between positive and negative spaces, between foreground and background, these ambiguous shapes appear and alter during viewing, transforming our perception and understanding of space.  For This Boston incorporates charcoal to explore subtleties of light and tone on the vertical and horizontal plane is sheer delight to the senses.  These are contemplative paintings which require time and patience. They are refreshingly tranquil and timeless in appearance, retaining an exquisite harmony with the brush. This is a delightful array of compelling abstract paintings to be appreciated by generations to come.

Since first exhibiting in 1972, Paul Boston has consistently held solo exhibitions at Niagara, Melbourne and Annandale Galleries Sydney and has been included in numerous exhibitions in Public Art Museums  both nationally and abroad including his recent survey exhibition Paul Boston: Stone Clouds at Heide Museum of Modern Art, Melbourne (2023).
In 1984 Boston was included in An International Survey of Recent Painting and Sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (MOMA).
