ARCHIVE
Segmentary Bodies is the third solo exhibition at the gallery with a new body of work by Australian artist David Keating which explores how human bodies are coded, by a myriad of forces from the political and sexual to the ideological.
Composed of works on paper and video installation, Keating further suggests the body is a contentious site in which micro narratives between these forces play out, tracing how the body is inhabited, experienced and understood in contemporary society.
Dr. Keating focuses on several extensive series of line drawings and video animation, characterised by subversive humour and an idiosyncratic personal iconography filled with dissonant cultural vocabularies - which the artist calls ‘cinematic drawings’.
Past institutional commissions and participation include Sculpture Park at Bass Museum of Art, Miami Beach (2012) and Art Altstetten Abisrieden, Zurich (2015) for Public Sculpture. Keating´s first institutional solo exhibition Endless Nameless at Kunsthaus Basel curated by Dr. Ines Goldbach and reviewed in Artforum (2014). Other significant institutional participation in the 1st Brussels Biennale at Witte de With Centre for Contemporary Art, Rotterdam (2009) and Contemporary Art Centre, Vilnius, Lithuania (2008).

Here we witness the continuation of his reinvigoration of the brick as a symbolic trope, combined with dislocated bodily forms, suggests a deeply confused contemporary relationship with our bodies. In an age identified by philosopher Byung-Chul Han as dominated by a neoliberal view —transforming the body into an object of optimization - Keating’s works humorously navigate the space between viewing the body as a grotesque spectacle and recognizing it as a living entity.
In Shitting Bricks (2024), abright pink background showcases dismembered legs standing on a toweringmonument, endlessly producing bricks to elevate their own status. The Acrobat (2024) depicts a breast shaped like a mountain, balancing a horizontal Romancolumn on its nipple.
